The Balancing Act
September 29th 2006 11:48
Owning your own small business is hard work. It takes time, dedication and occasionally some ruthlessness to make it a success. But as you often hear people say – there is more to life than work, and this stands true for running your own small business.
People devote a lot of time into establishing their dream. They eat, sleep and breath every aspect of getting the business off the ground and helping it maintain flight. Often times, this is to the detriment of their personal lives, be it social or family.
It’s vital to maintain balance between work and your social life. If you don’t, something will eventually crash and burn and all your hard work will be turned to ashes.
There have been small business owners who have devoted so much of their time and efforts into their business that their family life has suffered, causing great tension in the home. This stress is then carried into the business and could affect productivity and the standard of services provided.
Overall, a tip in the scales can lead to disappointment in both your business and personal life.
Here are some points on how to balance your commitments:
1) Establish realistic work hours and stick to them
2) Don’t bring work home
3) Don’t take your personal life to work
4) Allow holiday time throughout the year
5) Look after your health
6) If you are having problems with the business, talk to someone
7) Likewise, if you are having personal problems, talk to someone
8) If you work from home, have a designated work area that’s for work alone
9) Make time for your friends, even if it’s a quick drink once a fortnight
10) Have a hobby or interest outside of work
The real secret to balancing professional and personal lives is scheduling. Give all the important things in your life, whatever they may be, the time they deserve. Success in business is usually propelled by confidence and happiness in your personal life. Don’t underestimate the need to balance both to ensure continued success.

The layout of your website is very aestheitcally pleasing and the purple hues with the icon picture are very fitting.
There were a few things I noticed on the website though that with a bit of tweaking could improve the overall readibility so if you're happy for me to comment on a few of them, personal message me your e-mail address.

A lot of has to do with self-discipline though. If you have self-discipline then the tips would be a lot easier to achieve.

It's still early so I'm still hopeful - I've been doing it for a while for gifts and schools until someone said I should sell them because they came out so nice. So I figured I'd give it a try

The most important thing is to persevere with it. Word of mouth is a wonderful marketing tool.
The actual business you've started I envisage would have little outlay and you'll be able to claim the majority of you computer usage as a tax offset. I'll be doing a post on this in the near future.
Good luck with it all!

What do you suggest or what approach would be cool to make it easy for them to understand what I'm doing and that sometimes I need their input?
